Hell Tor Festival

This green putrescent land…this spectred isle…and no realm as haunted as Dartmoor…

The Hell Tor Festival is a celebration of Devon’s heritage and legacy of horrors, celebrated by screenings, special guests and lectures on the magical and macabre. We are also looking for supernatural / folk horror short films to screen at the event and be part of a special showcase.

Directed by Sue Thorpe, the festival hopes to inspire interest and collaboration via a range of films, industry panels and practical workshops. Apart from bringing the best of genre and independent film and genre talent to the South West, we also aim to give fledgling filmmakers the chance to not only showcase their work but meet people from their chosen industry and guide them towards future development. This years festival takes place from Friday 20th September – Sunday 22nd September at the Exeter Phoenix.

What are we looking for?

Hell Tor Festival 2019

Never short of a lure to draw you back upon the moor…

The Hell Tor Festival is a celebration of Devon’s heritage and legacy of horrors, thus we are looking for supernatural short films, ideally with a twist of local legend, folk horror or mythology about them.
They can speak of an ancient evil, be a snapshot of history, take place in modern times, be live action or animation (or a mixture of both). We only ask that the films to be no shorter than 2 minutes and no longer than 20 minutes.

The Westcountry is a mine of wonderful stories, so tell us a great one.

Venue

The Exeter Phoenix is a vibrant, world-class multi-artform venue in the heart of Exeter’s city centre. Each year it host hundreds of events and artistic activity spanning many disciplines. The Phoenix also nurtures a thriving arts scene through its Creative Hub, supporting artists, musicians, theatre companies, filmmakers and creatives at every stage of their career and practice. As well as presenting work, they also thrive on developing new talent by giving artists the tools to experiment, take risks and realise their best ideas. The Exeter Phoenix has helped launch the careers of award-winning filmmakers (including Carrion Films Ashley Thorpe who still teaches regular workshops there) and provided a support network for those looking to embark on creative endeavours for the first time. It is the perfect home for our festival.
